Does this sound familiar? An organization decides to make a significant technology investment. It could be a new website or data warehouse or development of a new business application. What follows is typically a 2-3 month effort to write a business case so the “Powers-That-Be” can review the proposed budget, schedule and return on investment. Assuming it’s approved, a team is formed and they go off for several more months to gather requirements and complete business analysis.

I'm presently working on a development project using waterfall methodology. We have the usual Microsoft Project plan, a set of milestones, and loose project management oversight with respect to the five week development cycle.

Let’s look at that for a minute. We have two teams who do not trust or understand each other – this will never equal success. A project without a business sponsor and an IT team that does not understand the business will also never equate to success. I am not saying all business projects are failures, I am simply stating that with a different approach there can be understanding.

Even with the recent surge in mobile internet growth, the majority of the websites on the Internet today are not mobile optimized. As Smartphones continue to gain popularity, websites will need to be updated to be mobile ready.

Many people are working to understand the opportunity and are questioning whether this current trend will have real impact. Well, my answer to that question is, “it depends!”
